In-Class Recap

The following recap of activities brings us to whee you should be relative to our reading of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men:

1) Chapters 1-3 have been read and the corresponding Student Guide completed.

2) Additional activities following the completion of Chapter 3 include a sociogram with Lennie and George being at the center, a characterization analysis of either Lennie or George depending on the first letter of your last name.

In-Class Today: October 6

The following activities took place in class today:

1) Proofreading Practice: "All Creatures Great and Small," Day 3.

2) Introduced the Daily Quote CROC (Copy, Restate, Opine, Connect) Activity and began with the following quote: "It takes hands to build a house, but only hearts can build a home.”~Author Unknown. (Note: This activity will continue to prepare students for the English Regents in June.)

3) Reviewed Literature Card decks terminology related to the analysis of characterization: characterization, character traits, indirect characterization, direct characterization, dynamic/round character, static/flat character.

4) Continued discussion of the relationship between the book The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros and the 2005 film, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. We then watched the next 45 minutes of the film and continued working on completed a graphic organizer on which students identified four behaviors for each of the main characters (Tibby, Lena, Carmen and Bridget) and what character traits is indirectly revealed by said action.
Homework:
a) 11-1: Reading assignment 5: pages 67-83, and journal for the following vignettes from The House on Mango Street: “Edna’s Ruthie," “Sire,” “No Speak English,” and “Rafaela Who....Juice on Tuesdays.”

b) 11-2: Read Section 4 pages 49-66 of The House on Mango Street and complete Reading Journal Entries as assigned for the following vignettes: “Chanclas,” “Papa Who Wakes Up Tired in the Dark,” “Born Bad,” and “Elenita, Cards, Palm, Water."

In-Class Today: October 2

The following activities took place in class today:

1) Proofreading Practice: "All Creatures Great and Small," Day 2.

2) Reviewed expectations for revising and finalizing "Model after Mango" vignette drafts. To be revised for homework.

3) Introduced and added to class Literature Card decks terminology related to the analysis of characterization: characterization, character traits, indirect characterization, direct characterization, dynamic/round character, static/flat character.

4) Discussed the relationship between the book The House on mango Street by Sandra Cisneros and the 2005 film, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. We then watched the first 60 minutes of the film and completed a graphic organizer on which students identified four behaviors for each of the main characters (Tibby, Lena, Carmen and Bridget) and what character traits is indirectly revealed by said action.

The following activities took place in class today:

1) Proofreading Practice: "All Creatures Great and Small," Day 1.

2) Reviewed reading journal expectations.

3) 11-1 ONLY: Went to library media center to word process final drafts of three "Model after Mango" vignettes.

3) 11-2 ONLY: Read the short story "Shaving" by Leslie Norris, with an eye toward identifying figurative language and point of view. Students were assigned to complete questions at the end of the story.
Homework:
a) Read assignment 5 of The House on Mango Street and reading journal entries for identified vignettes only.

In-Class Today: September 28

The following activities took place in class today:

1) Proofreading Practice: "The Petrified Forest" Day 4.

2) Add four new terms (and their definitions) to class set of Literature Cards: literal, figurative, direct metaphor, indirect metaphor

3) 11-1 ONLY: Begin Reading Section 4 of The House on Mango Street.

3) 11-2 ONLY: Completed Reading Section 3 of The House on Mango Street and questions 1-10 assigned fro completion for homework.

4) Introduce prompt for Model after Mango 3: Fitting In--On a sheet of loose leaf paper write a (2)-paragraph vignette in which you consider the following: Think about a time during which you felt uncomfortable in the shoes or clothes you were wearing. What were the circumstances? What did the clothes/shoes that you wore “say” about you? What about your shoes/clothing made you feel uncomfortable? How did you handle the situation? Utilize one example each of sensory detail, direct metaphor, indirect metaphor and repetition.
Homework:
a) 11-1 ONLY: The House on Mango Street Reading Assignment 4 and reading journal entries.

a) 11-2 ONLY: Reading Assignment 3 comprehension questions 1 thrhu 10.

b) Complete drafting Model After Mango 3 if necessary.
